EAL Aims

Aims of the EAL Department

  • To promote achievement in all areas of the curriculum
  • To promote integration in all aspects of school life
  • To celebrate cultural diversity
  • To develop links with the ethnic and wider community
  • To raise awareness of EAL issues across the curriculum
  • To expand the Extended Learning programme to include both EAL classes and minority language classes for students and their families

EAL (English as an Additional Language) Option  at Key Stage 4

  • This course is designed for pupils whose first language is not English.
  • It will cater for pupils new to the language as well as more advanced learners of English.
  • It will raise pupils’ level of English in all skill areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • It will help pupils improve attainment across all subjects 

QUALIFICATIONS

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Skills for Life Certificate is designed to help  pupils of all abilities improve their English skills

You  will gain accreditation at different levels depending on your  English language skills:

  • Entry Levels 1,2 and 3: Units in Speaking & Listening, Reading and Writing for pupils new to the language
  • Level 1 National Adult Literacy test: this is assessed onscreen for more advanced learners of English
  • Level 2 National Adult Literacy test: this is also assessed onscreen and designed for advanced learners of the language

Pupils entered for the Adult Literacy tests at Level  1 and 2 will also be given the opportunity of gaining accreditation in Adult Numeracy at both levels, depending on their ability.

These qualifications are recognized by both employers and FE and will help you progress into employment and further study.
