- To develop the ability to use the target language effectively for the purposes of
   practical communication.

- To form a sound base of the skills, language and attitudes required for further study,
   work and leisure.

- To offer insights into the culture and civilisation of the countries where the target
   language is spoken.

- To develop an awareness of the nature of language learning.

- To provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation.

- To encourage positive attitudes to foreigners and to foreign language learning and a
   sympathetic approach to other cultures and civilisations.

- To promote learning skills of a more general application.

- To develop students' understanding of themselves and their own culture.

- To develop schemes of work which take full account of individual needs.

- To ensure progression and continuity in teaching and learning with systemati
   assessment, recording and reporting of students' progress.
